Music as a Career

"One good thing about Music , when it hits you, you feel no pain" - Bob Marley

Music has the power to make you feel better when you are having the worst day possible. There is a song for whatever mood you are in to uplift you. The field of Music is as far and wide like the personalities of each unique individual. If you decide to pursue Music as a Career, you have selected one of the greatest career paths in life. If you decide to take this path, here are some things you need to consider:

Make sure you are driven by Passion: If you have one of those "get rich quick mentalities" your career will be short lived or even non- existent. Most established musicians will say, they had an innate passion for music and it chose them instead of the other way around. If you have no natural talent or no love for it ... don't get involved.

Knowledge is Power: Information can never be too much (even in this "Facebook Age") This is where Self Investment is important. Invest in books, go to seminars, listen to Pod-casts.. whatever you can do to get information in this field, do it. As mentioned above, Music is a wide field and one can get lost or even misled. If you have the right information you will be well equipped with the relevant skills to make yourself better and have a successful career.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Look at it this way ... this is your gift to the world. This gift has to be beautifully packaged and presented to the world. Practice makes perfect and it makes sense. Imagine being selected to perform at the Superbowl or a World Cup Soccer Match and you totally flop because you didn't practice singing live. Practicing saves you from humiliation and sharpens your skills.

Network: Having talent is not enough! You need to know the right people and start building your "brand". Brands are not what they used to be in the early 90's where people associated it with material objects like shoes and bags. Building a brand is important as it is needed for growth in your career. Align your self with some of the movers and shakers in the Industry, Attend Industry Events.... Volunteer. In today's' society many artistes completely negate volunteering as they believe the world owes them money for their time. Not so at all ... it is not what you can receive but rather what you can give.

Be Versatile: In the Jamaican society many people associate Music Artistes with poverty .. almost every song or Video has something to do with hardship in the ghetto. There is nothing wrong with singing from experience and trying to appeal to emotion, but if you place yourself in that one box.. how will you grow? What if the opportunity comes up for you to collaborate with another popular well established artiste who sings more positive music? This would have missed you because all you know about is "hardship in the ghetto".
