Successful Tips for Going on Tour: Part 1

Jumping from one place to another, reaching out to fans and other curious Joes and doing your favorite thing in the world. This sounds like a great opportunity for a musician whether new on the scene or an established entertainment mogul to spread their influence to different geographies. Seeing persons outside of your local fan-base respond to your music is the ultimate reward for a musician .However, touring also comes with its eventualities and putting in quality preparations for your tour will make it as satisfying and beneficial as it can be.

Here are 9 successful tips for going on tour!

TIP #1:  Legitimate Work
Plane tickets? check
Itinerary? Check
Work permit? Uuuum?

Whatever you do, wherever you go, ensure that you secure for yourself a work permit for you to freely traverse on your tour without any glitches or hitches with the law.

Decide how you will apply, whether online or on paper.
Get the application package
Pay the application fees
Submit your application

Once you have your work permit, you are good to set up the logistics of your tour! One step closer to a successful tour!

TIP #2: Prepare your Electronic Press Kit

Before you wheel out your suitcases and dust off your passport you need to make sure your electronic press kit (EPK) is in tip top shape, indeed pristine condition to submit to venues along with all your social media channels and your website being up to date.

TIP#3: Do your Research

Have you ever been to a new place or event that didn’t quite meet up to your expectations in terms of entertainment value and value for your money? You want to ensure that the places you visit during your tour are worth visiting. Is this where your target market is? Are people keen on coming to the locations you have chosen? Many artistes or marketing managers (some artistes juggle both and have even more roles) separate their markets into A, B and C markets.
“A” markets are big music markets,” B” markets tend to be less dense areas but still with decent art scenes while “C” markets are typically less populated areas ; build your itinerary accordingly. While A markets will give maximum exposure, B and C markets are just itching for excitement and high entertainment! Your research will allow you to make informed decisions about venues. You will be able to uncover who has been to these venues before, how successful they have been and whether it is worth it to go there.
Once you get a hold of list of venues in the markets you want to tour through research, begin contacting them with your EPK and start confirming and solidifying your route. Six to twelve (6-12) months in advance is the best time to start doing this.
This tip will save your life! Don’t skip it.

TIP#4: Eye out your Pit stops.

The previous tip leads us to the next step of properly planning your tour. Planning a tour is a diligent process if you want the best results, more fans and more love from loyal fans. You should plan your tour at least six months, even a year in advance. This will give you room to wiggle your toes and to fit comfortably on venue booking calendars well in advance. You will also have time to plan your marketing calendar – from scheduling social media posts to getting on community calendars getting the people ready for your tour.

Successful tips for Shooting a Music Video

Sooo you've made it to that point where you've written a hit song, recorded it , did some promotion and is now ready to shoot the Video. Believe it or not , shooting a Music Video is no easy feat. It involves working with people with different personalities and trying to match creative personalities by bring a creative vision to life. Below are tips for shooting a music video successfully.

Get a Script: You need a script! There are no ifs, buts or maybes... this will serve as a guide to your video and will help you to know who or what goes where and also all the scenes and transitions. As mentioned above each person has their own idea and its important to have some sort of direction for clarity. Here at Master One Productions Ltd, a script is included in the videos we shoot for our clients.

Be on Time: In this Industry time is literally money. You should have a running order which is like an Agenda or Program for the day which tells you who will show up when and the time things will get done. It is important to do make-up first as this takes the longest. The artiste also needs to not play Diva/Divo and show up at their respective time, even before everyone else.

Have all you Need: Ensure that you have all Lens and Props that you will need for the shoot. It looks really un-professional when a director or producer shows up to set scurrying around for items. If you have trouble keeping track of all you need , write a list and pack them over night.

Quiet on Set! A music Video is not a rave .. even if your song is about an actual Rave! It is not a free pass to a party but it should be taken seriously. There should be no noise, boisterous laughing or anything that is considered disruptive. There is a trend here in Jamaica where artistes tend to bring an "entourage" when they are filming. This entourage consists of : A best friend , mother, cousin , brother, girlfriend , baby mama ,cousins boyfriend and so on. Keep it professional!

Be Creative: I have seen music videos that make absolutely no sense. It's like seeing an airplane on a train track in terms of the way the video and the song differs. The Music Video has to actually make sense! It has to capture elements of the Song in a visual format.Remember at the end of it , your name will be in the end credits and will be the first thing people see when the Video premiers.

10 Ways to Kill your Music Career

Music is a wonderful field to get into. It requires Talent , Passion and Dedication. There are some people who dive into the Industry without any clue thinking they can do it all by themselves. This , along with others ways is how you can kill your Music career before it even starts.

Having an "Entitled" Attitude: Many Artistes and Musicians go into the industry thinking they are entitled to everything. They show up late to rehearsals, skip studio sessions and are generally rude to everybody because they believe the industry owes them something for their talent.

Substance Abuse: I have no idea why Musicians and Artistes love drugs .. maybe because it's easily accessible and cheap compared to a Lamborghini.Whatever it is, it is one of the quickest ways to kill your career .. literally. Think Whitney Houston and Jamaican artiste Tiger ( not dead physically but his Career is )

Not having a serious Web Presence: We live in a Digital Age, most people are logged on to whatever device for more than half the day. Artistes need to find a way to reach these potential fans when they are online by committing to building their online presence.

Not Touring: Some artistes like Celine Dion make the bulk of their Revenue from touring. Touring is getting harder and harder since recording continues to devaluate. Tip for Touring: Tour with a popular artiste in the same genre as yourself.

Not Being Fully Available: Having a successful music career is a full time business. It is impossible to have a full-time music career and a full-time job at the same time. Something has got to give.

Giving Away too much Free Music: Sure you can have a few Promo CD's to give to promoters and disc jocks, but there is no sense in giving your music away to everyone who asks. How will you make money? There is a discrete way of telling your fans to purchase your music online.

Delivering a Terrible Press-Kit: A Press-Kit is like your "Musical Resume", ensure that all words are correctly spelled, ensure the pictures are current. A powerful, well-crafted Press Kit dramatically increases the chances of catapulting your career to the next level.

Relying on everyone but yourself to build your Career: Sure Managers , A&R and Record Labels are there to help you get your talent to that level ... but that is exactly what they are there to do.. help you. The onus is on you to go that extra mile to stay a few hours more in Studio to perfect that song.

Making Terrible Music: In the Jamaican Society for example, this seems to be very popular. A lot of young artistes are making music that has no value and makes no sense. Sure it's popular for now .. but it has no staying power or longevity.

Not Selling Merchandise: This is for more established Artistes. Once you've built a fan-base , its now time to add merchandise... It could be T-Shirts, Shoes, Watches .. whatever it is, sell something with your name on it! This is additional Revenue.

3 Reasons You Need an Audio Engineer

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain"
The above saying by Reggae Icon Bob Marley from his popular song "Trenchtown Rock" might be true , however you need a professional to help you make that music and take you to the level of Bob Marley.

Who is an Audio Engineer?
An Audio Engineer is someone who uses specialized machinery and equipment to record , mix or reproduce music , voices or sound effects. Below are 5 reasons why you need an Audio Engineer.

1. To Track your Vocals: You might think you have the best voice in the world ( along with your mom and dad) But there are certain key elements only an Audio Engineer will know. Maybe you are singing a certain key too high or low and the Engineer will know just how to manipulate his equipment to get your voice to the right level.

2.  To Ensure your tracks are properly mixed: Mixing Software are a dime a dozen , they can be downloaded from a variety of websites on the website , some even Free. These days everybody is a "professional mixer" . You want to ensure that you take those songs you spent hours recording to a professional to ensure they sound right and not "muddy" like you are constantly falling down a tunnel.

3. To build a sustainable Brand: Believe it or not , building a music career has a lot to do with "Brand Building". This also has a lot to do with the way your market perceives your Brand ( your voice/talent ) Let's take T-pain for example ... his Brand had a lot to do with the way an Audio Engineer manipulated his Voice with Auto Tunes. After this, Auto Tunes Skyrocketed and everybody's voices came out sounding amazing ( until Jay-Z declared a "death of Auto- Tunes) However , it all had to do with the professional skills of one person knowing how to manipulate that voice.

5 Things to Consider when booking a Studio

If you are an Artiste, upcoming or established you would have been in a Studio at least once or considered Booking Studio Time. If you are an upcoming artiste and is not quite sure about Booking a studio for your latest project, here are a few tips below:

1. Pick the right type of Studio that is beneficial to your Project: Not all Studios will fit all talents. It is important to note that not all Studios will do every genre of music. There are certain Studios in Jamaica that only do Reggae and Dancehall. Be sure to do your research and pick the one that suits your needs.

2. Meet the Engineer: Engineers are a dime a dozen! It is important to meet with the engineer to see if he/she is the right fit. Remember that you will be working with this person and it is important that you are comfortable as they will be tapping into your creativity and ability to produce quality music. Ensure that they are a reputable person and have been in the industry for some time and have experience working with different individuals.

3. Get the Best Price: Cheaper is not always better! Get a studio with a rate you are comfortable paying. It makes no sense booking a Studio with a cheap rate that has below than average equipment. The most important thing to think about is your career. Nobody wants to have a muddy track.

4. Come to your Session on Time: Time is something that can never be re-gained, if you are serious about your career you will always at least try to be on time. There is an old saying with something to the effect that "Artiste's are free spirits and will show up when they want" . My take... show up late and wait until the other person who came for their time is finished. Be respectful and show up for the time you booked. In the event that you will be late .. call in advance.

5. Do not Leave your Masters in the Studio: Do not depend on the Studio to store them for you once projects are completed. The Master is the “tracked out” Data files that can be further edited or remixed. The value of your project is usually in the physical ownership of your Masters.

These tips are sure to help your next Studio Session be smooth

Singer Omari Banks takes the Music Industry by Storm

FORMER West Indies cricketer Omari Banks has his sights set on scoring in music circles with his latest single Jehovah Message.

It is the follow-up to Unafraid, a song that did well in his country, Anguilla, and the Eastern Caribbean.

"Jehovah Message is about focusing on what matters. As I transitioned from cricket to music a couple years ago, I started to grow my hair and I got some push back about that," he said. "People were used to seeing me with waves in my hair, so as my hair grew some people would whisper and have something to say; but the bigger picture, I'm more than my hair."

Jehovah Message was recorded in Jamaica at the studio of Steven Stanley who also engineered and mixed the track. Saxophonist Dean Fraser, drummer Sly Dunbar, bassist Glen Browne, keyboardist Robbie Lyn and percussionist Denver Smith played on the song with backing vocals by Junior Jazz and Lateef Banks (Omari's cousin).

Banks is the son of Anguillan recording artiste Bankie Banks, one of the best known musicians in the Eastern Caribbean.

The younger Banks excelled at cricket for the Leeward Islands and the West Indies, but said a music career was inevitable.

"I grew up with and around my father and all of his musical friends, so I certainly saw music as something that I could do professionally," he said. "I started out in talent shows when I was four or five years old, and even had a chance to go on stage with my dad on some shows in Italy, so definitely that planted a seed."

Banks senior has also recorded in Jamaica and is close friends with Stephen 'Cat' Coore of Third World, Benjy Myaz and Junior Jazz.

An all-rounder, Omari Banks retired from professional cricket three years ago with solid returns at the first-class and Test levels.

With sports out of the way, he has more time for performing and recording.

"Even as I travelled and played cricket, I always continued to play my guitar and sing when the occasion presented itself, but especially in 2009 and 2010 I really wanted to go deeper in my guitar," he explained. "I'm a vocalist, but I'm also really passionate about the guitar, and anything that you want to do at a high level you have to immerse yourself in it."

Banks made his recording debut in 2011 with the reggae-flavoured Move On, which is also the title of his debut album, released in 2012.

Banks gained some traction regionally last year when his first video, Unafraid, topped cable station Tempo's Cross Caribbean Countdown for several weeks.

He recently signed a distribution deal with Red Bullet Records in The Netherlands to release Unafraid in Europe. He plans to release the song in the United States during the summer.

Highlights from "Journey Of A Young Warrior", Tydal's Ep Launch PT 1

THE evening showers didn't dampen the proceedings at the launch of reggae artiste Tydal's EP entitled Journey of a Young Warrior at Red Bones Blues Café in St Andrew, on Tuesday evening.

Despite a late start, the moderate-sized gathering was treated to offerings from the singjay's growing catalogue of songs as well as performances from the Penthouse stable of acts.

"The seven-track EP is all about consolidating a couple of my new tracks. I haven't been flooding the market with songs, so we decided to do it professionally and the idea for the EP came about. The finished product is good; I just hope the fans will give it a listening ear," said Tydal, whose given name is Navardo Graham.

Journey of a Young Warrior features production work from his management company Master One Productions, Penthouse Records, Europe-based House of Riddims and Sweat Box Productions. It is being distributed by Master One Productions and VPAL Music.

Tracks include Tears like Mine, Street Life, Coward, Draw the Line and Silent Warrior.

Guest performers for the evening included Sophia Squire, Shuga, Dalton Harris, D Major, and Exco Levi.

Music as a Career

"One good thing about Music , when it hits you, you feel no pain" - Bob Marley

Music has the power to make you feel better when you are having the worst day possible. There is a song for whatever mood you are in to uplift you. The field of Music is as far and wide like the personalities of each unique individual. If you decide to pursue Music as a Career, you have selected one of the greatest career paths in life. If you decide to take this path, here are some things you need to consider:

Make sure you are driven by Passion: If you have one of those "get rich quick mentalities" your career will be short lived or even non- existent. Most established musicians will say, they had an innate passion for music and it chose them instead of the other way around. If you have no natural talent or no love for it ... don't get involved.

Knowledge is Power: Information can never be too much (even in this "Facebook Age") This is where Self Investment is important. Invest in books, go to seminars, listen to Pod-casts.. whatever you can do to get information in this field, do it. As mentioned above, Music is a wide field and one can get lost or even misled. If you have the right information you will be well equipped with the relevant skills to make yourself better and have a successful career.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Look at it this way ... this is your gift to the world. This gift has to be beautifully packaged and presented to the world. Practice makes perfect and it makes sense. Imagine being selected to perform at the Superbowl or a World Cup Soccer Match and you totally flop because you didn't practice singing live. Practicing saves you from humiliation and sharpens your skills.

Network: Having talent is not enough! You need to know the right people and start building your "brand". Brands are not what they used to be in the early 90's where people associated it with material objects like shoes and bags. Building a brand is important as it is needed for growth in your career. Align your self with some of the movers and shakers in the Industry, Attend Industry Events.... Volunteer. In today's' society many artistes completely negate volunteering as they believe the world owes them money for their time. Not so at all ... it is not what you can receive but rather what you can give.

Be Versatile: In the Jamaican society many people associate Music Artistes with poverty .. almost every song or Video has something to do with hardship in the ghetto. There is nothing wrong with singing from experience and trying to appeal to emotion, but if you place yourself in that one box.. how will you grow? What if the opportunity comes up for you to collaborate with another popular well established artiste who sings more positive music? This would have missed you because all you know about is "hardship in the ghetto".

Master One Productions is located at 6 Ballater Avenue, Kingston 10.
If you are an aspiring Artiste, Call us at 876-632-3743.
We are willing to provide you with the tools to grow your skills/talent.
