10 Ways to Kill your Music Career

Music is a wonderful field to get into. It requires Talent , Passion and Dedication. There are some people who dive into the Industry without any clue thinking they can do it all by themselves. This , along with others ways is how you can kill your Music career before it even starts.

Having an "Entitled" Attitude: Many Artistes and Musicians go into the industry thinking they are entitled to everything. They show up late to rehearsals, skip studio sessions and are generally rude to everybody because they believe the industry owes them something for their talent.

Substance Abuse: I have no idea why Musicians and Artistes love drugs .. maybe because it's easily accessible and cheap compared to a Lamborghini.Whatever it is, it is one of the quickest ways to kill your career .. literally. Think Whitney Houston and Jamaican artiste Tiger ( not dead physically but his Career is )

Not having a serious Web Presence: We live in a Digital Age, most people are logged on to whatever device for more than half the day. Artistes need to find a way to reach these potential fans when they are online by committing to building their online presence.

Not Touring: Some artistes like Celine Dion make the bulk of their Revenue from touring. Touring is getting harder and harder since recording continues to devaluate. Tip for Touring: Tour with a popular artiste in the same genre as yourself.

Not Being Fully Available: Having a successful music career is a full time business. It is impossible to have a full-time music career and a full-time job at the same time. Something has got to give.

Giving Away too much Free Music: Sure you can have a few Promo CD's to give to promoters and disc jocks, but there is no sense in giving your music away to everyone who asks. How will you make money? There is a discrete way of telling your fans to purchase your music online.

Delivering a Terrible Press-Kit: A Press-Kit is like your "Musical Resume", ensure that all words are correctly spelled, ensure the pictures are current. A powerful, well-crafted Press Kit dramatically increases the chances of catapulting your career to the next level.

Relying on everyone but yourself to build your Career: Sure Managers , A&R and Record Labels are there to help you get your talent to that level ... but that is exactly what they are there to do.. help you. The onus is on you to go that extra mile to stay a few hours more in Studio to perfect that song.

Making Terrible Music: In the Jamaican Society for example, this seems to be very popular. A lot of young artistes are making music that has no value and makes no sense. Sure it's popular for now .. but it has no staying power or longevity.

Not Selling Merchandise: This is for more established Artistes. Once you've built a fan-base , its now time to add merchandise... It could be T-Shirts, Shoes, Watches .. whatever it is, sell something with your name on it! This is additional Revenue.
